Responsibilities

Job Description:
We are looking for a talented Structures and Mechanism Engineer to design various mechanical assemblies for JPL’s Mars Sample Return (MSR) Mission. As a Mechanical Engineer II, you will design various subsystems, working closely with other members of an interdisciplinary team. This job requires enthusiasm, creativity, and attention to detail in order to develop unique, practical, and novel designs capable of achieving the mission objectives. You will be working for the Payload and Small Spacecraft Mechanical Engineering Section (355), which is responsible for the structures, mechanisms, and mechanical systems engineering of payloads and small spacecraft across all phases of the mission lifecycle.
 
You will:
• Serve as a Mechanical Engineer for a JPL flight project
• Partner with other engineers to generate engineering requirements and specifications for mechanical systems
• Design complex structures and mechanisms with challenging engineering requirements
• Participate in concept development teams by introducing and infusing new approaches
• Develop designs that must operate in extreme environments
• Generate design review materials that document and validate your designs

Qualifications

Required Skills:
• Must be a US Citizen or Green Card Holder
• Offer contingent on ability to successfully pass a background check and drug screen
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline with a minimum of 1 year of related experience; Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a similar discipline
• Knowledge of structural and mechanism design
• Ability to juggle and prioritize a number of tasks in order to meet commitments with high- quality products
• Excellent communication skills and accountability working in a virtual environment
 
Desired Skills:
• Practical experience with CAD modeling software, especially UG-NX
• Familiarity with Geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) using ASME Y14.5-2009
• Experience with spaceflight hardware development
• Experience with testbeds for hardware development
• Experience developing rapid-prototypes and proof-of-concept demonstration units
